Vacation Packing

Summer vacations are always fun. Packing for summer vacations however is not. Saying that I am an over packer would be an understatement. I always pack a million things because I am one of those people who hates to not have options when it comes to clothes and accessories on vacation. Still even with all of my over packing I guarantee you I will still wish I had something that I didn't bring while on my trip. This trip I decided to take a photo inventory of all of the things I packed just to see how much I actually pack. It boils down to 9 pairs of shoes, 6 purses, 2 belts, 9 dresses, 8 tops, 4 pairs of shorts, 1 pair of jeans, 1 skirt, 2 pairs of sunglasses, 3 necklaces, 9 pairs of earrings, 13 rings, 4 bracelets and a late additions of 1 jacket and one sweater to last me a week and a half. Thanks to my wonderful Tetris master mom who thankfully came over to help me pack, all of it including a pillow fit into two suitcases. Now the trick is going to be to get it all to fit back in the suitcases to come home.

Pi

Pi's Kirkwood Location

Prosciutto Bites

Sausage Pizza
On Friday a friend and I felt like pizza, and since a co-worker and I had recently been talking about Pi I decided that should be the place to get it.
This was my second time eating at Pi. The first trip was to their U City location a while back. We sat on the patio had lemon drop martinis and shared prosciutto bites and a pizza with pesto and artichokes. The martinis and prosciutto bites were heavenly and the pizza was good, not amazing because the artichokes kind of overwhelmed the actual taste of the pizza, but it was still quite good.
On this second trip to Pi's Kirkwood location, I tried the seasonal white wine sangria instead of the lemon drop. The sangria was just ok and it didn't have fruit in it, which to me is the best part of sangria. We revisited the the prosciutto bites which this go 'round were ok, not the heavenly taste I remembered from before. The pizza we had was delicious though. Instead of the crazy toppings we got a plain sausage pizza and this time you could actually taste the full flavor of the pizza and its cornbread crust as opposed to the just toppings. We sat inside the restaurant, as it was too hot for outside, and the inside had a great atmosphere. We went sort of late so there weren't a ton of people there and we missed the family dinner rush which was nice. On top of that our waitress was super nice and service was speedy. The only regret I really had from the evening was not getting some of pastry chef Matthew Rice's gooey butter cookies to go :). So if you are looking for something different then your usual pizza from a delivery check out Pi and don't forget the cookies!

Shoe Envy

My newest bit of shoe envy is for these Nine West platform sandals. These sandals are perfect for taking you from summer to fall to wear with dresses now and jeans later. They come in four colors and have a four inch heel with a one inch platform. At $89 they are a little over the usual amount I spend for shoes so of course I've flagged them on Shop Style and now can't wait for them to go on sale!

Product of the Week

Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo

Giovanni Magnetic Moisturizing Conditioner

This week's product or should I say products of the week are Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat shampoo and Magnetic Moisturizing conditioner. For the past year I have been the sort of Goldilocks of budget friendly shampoos and conditioners. I used to use Davines which I really liked, but my budget hated it since it is not exactly a wallet friendly brand, so I set out on my journey through the haircare aisle at Target.
I have a lot of really fine hair that tends to be on the drier side so I was on the look out for a great moisturizing combo. I also wanted the products to be organic or as natural as possible because I had just read an article on shampoos and how most of the moisturizing types contain propylene glycol which is apparently also a component of plane de-icing solution. So using products containing this chemical along with other pore opening chemicals is basically, as I understood it, like opening the pores on your scalp and pouring plane de-icer in them. Not exactly an appealing thought, and I can't imagine that a lifetime of using those products can be healthy.
Finding an organic or natural shampoo can be tricky as some of them can be drying. However, I found the perfect mix of moisturizing and natural with the Giovanni line. I first came upon the conditioner while at Whole Foods in Brentwood. My hair at the time was in massive need of some tlc after testing out a product that was sent to me to do a product test and survey for that left my hair unmanageable and scarecrow like. After about three uses of this conditioner my hair was back to normal. It was soft, smooth and not nearly as dry. After the success of the conditioner I decided to try the shampoo.
I found the shampoo at Ulta where they had a sale for buy one for $7.99 and get one free on all Giovanni products. They did not carry the magnetic line so I decided to try two of the shampoos instead. Of the two that I purchased I chose to use the tea tree one first based on it's refreshing minty scent, which is fabulous for a post gym shower or after walking around in this Midwest humidity that causes you to sweat like you are at the gym. Not only is the scent amazing it also cleans you hair without stripping the heck out of it or fading your color. And best of all is you get all of that without the use of nasty chemicals, and who doesn't love that.

Deal of the Day

Necklace: Express

Earrings: Express

With today's economy causing everyone to be a little more frugal with their spending, ladies everywhere are looking for ways to spruce up their existing wardrobes on the cheap. One of the easiest ways to do that is with jewelry, since nothing transforms old looks into new better then accessories. That is why today's deal of the day is this necklace from Express. It's a long gold Y shaped necklace that is knotted in the middle with loose chain ends. This necklace will look great with strapless dresses and tops for summer and will easily carry over to fall and winter when paired with a v-neck tee and blazer. The necklace is originally $34.50 but if you can get your hands on one of the coupons that came out in the mail a few weeks ago you can save $15 before August 1st, making the necklace only $19.50. As always, you can add another piece of jewelry to your purchase, like the earrings above for $26.90, for half off. These earrings would be great for going out, used to dress up a casual day outfit or worn with pretty much anything except the necklace obviously, as that would be overkill :)

Gaga Takes St. Louis

Saturday night at the Lady Gaga concert at the Scottrade Center, Gaga took everyone in attendance on a trip to the Monster Ball... and what a trip it was! There were some definite fashion do's there like the woman above in her fabulously cute rendition of Gaga's look (people were literally lining up to get a picture with/of her)...

And there were also a lot of fashion don'ts like the gentleman above who was wearing a flesh colored bodysuit and caution tape. Walking around the concourse before the show was probably one of the highlights of the night, every time you thought you saw the craziest get up ever two seconds later you would see someone that topped it.

The opening number Dance in the Dark

This was the best costume of the night the headpiece and wings moved in and out, the shoes were amazing and it must have weighed a ton since she had to pitch forward to walk back up to the main stage with it on and I think three people helped to lift it off her.

During Teeth in true Gaga shock fashion she smeared fake blood all over herself.
Overall it was a great show. It was every bit the theatrical spectacle that everyone imagined. There were at least five complete set changes and nine costume changes for Lady Gaga. The most outrageous one (I unfortunately could not get a good shot of it) looked like one of the brushes that washes your car at a drive thru car wash. It was a huge white cylinder that had a cut out for her face and two layers of large felt strips hanging from it. Before fans could really comprehend what it was she had removed it.
Another interesting part of the show was the intro to Telephone. At each show Lady Gaga performs she makes a call to a fan in the audience who has a Virgin Mobile cell phone. In return Virgin Mobile donates $20,000 each show to the Re*Generation project that works to end youth homelessness and also provides shelter for LGBT youth who have been kicked out their homes. So one lucky fan got the chance of a lifetime and hundreds of homeless youth get a new lease on life. Not bad for a five minute phone call. At the end of the call Gaga announced someone was beeping in, and of course it was a pretend call from Beyonce which lead into Telephone and the crowd going bananas.
The show rounded out with Lady Gaga arriving to the monster ball and singing Bad Romance for the encore which had everyone in attendance singing and dancing along. Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah-ah, roma-roma-mamaa, ga-ga-ooh-la-la... :)

Lola

Saturday night before the Lady Gaga concert my mom and I grabbed dinner at Lola. I had been here once before for a friends birthday and had the Josephine sandwich, which was good but I wanted to make a second trip to try out some of the other menu options. The restaurant was a little packed so they let us know ahead of time that in order to make the concert on time we would need to order off the tapas side of the menu, which was fine by us and I thought it was a nice gesture that they let us know before hand. For drinks I started with what I think was called the Lafayette, it was champagne with Chambord. It was ok, a little heavy on the Chambord which gave it a bit of a cough syrup taste. The drink I had with dinner was much better. The Parisstyle was Lola's version of my favorite martini, the French martini. Lola's version includes raspberry vodka instead of regular vodka added to the usual pineapple juice and chambord. It was delicious.

For dinner we decided on the Lola's fish and frittes, Lola duet (two towered sliders one with mushrooms and onions the, the other with bleu cheese and bacon) and a side of mac and cheese. The fish and frittes were nothing short of amazing. They were little fried fish nuggets served on top of fries and served in a wire cone basket. Since the fish was served on top, the fries in the bottom of the cone were a little soggy. I like soggy fries so I was fine with that, but those opposed to softer fries may want to ask for them to be served on a plate. Either way I highly recommend the dish. The Lola duet burgers were good. My mom had the mushroom burger which she thought was awesome. I had the bleu cheese burger which was good but I had to take some of the bleu cheese off since there was literally a patty of bleu cheese the size of the burger patties between each burger. While I like bleu cheese it was a bit much. The mac and cheese was delicious as well, and the portion is quite hefty so you should plan on splitting it. My mom and I could have easily split just the mac and cheese and fish and frittes and been perfectly content.
The restaurant itself has an urban modern loungey feel which makes it great for dinner with the girls or date night. The tapas section provides a lot of options for sharing so it's also a perfect place for groups. They also have a nice bar area with extensive drink menu and live music most nights, so if it's just a quick drink or happy hour your looking for you won't be disappointed.

Sale Alert

For those of you looking to help stimulate the economy this weekend there are two big sales going on. The first is Nordstrom's anniversary sale, where you can find great deals on new fall merchandise as well as summer clearance. These Vince Camuto booties are normally $119 and are now available in the store in black and grey (shown above) for $79.90, they are also online in carmel but only in size 10.
Also Macy's is having a one day sale tomorrow with a preview sale today where clearance merchandise will be 25-70% off. So as usual I will be hitting up the Rachel Roy and INC sections looking for great buys. And remember retail sales were down in June so it is your patriotic duty to make sure July fares better :) Happy Shopping!

Shoe Envy

Pierre Hardy leather cut out sandal
I am absolutely in looooove with these shoes. I cannot get over the cut out pattern, so awesome. Unfortunately, even with 40% off they are still $454 so they will have to stay on my wish list for when I win the lottery. Cue the Travie McCoy song now :)

Product of the Week

Maybelline The Falsies Mascara

Ever since I decided it was ridiculous to pay $30 for mascara (I used Chanel Inimitable) I have been searching for the perfect cheap mascara. I was near the end of my fifth tube, still without a winner, when I saw an ad for The Falsies. I have never used a Maybelline mascara other then Great Lash, which irritates my eyes, so I was a little reluctant to try it but the ad made me curious. Not that I expected to have the ridiculously fake CGI eyelashes of Erin Wasson from the print ad but it sounded promising.
It took me a few stops to track it down; most of the drugstores either were sold out or didn't carry it yet and I couldn't find it online either. I finally found it at the Target in Brentwood. They had a few so if you would like to try it you better get while the getting is good, and I highly suggest you try it. What makes this mascara so great is it comes with a flat curved wand so it separates and coats every lash giving the lashes a full and lush look. I thought it did a decent job on lengthening too as long as you curl your lashes before applying and apply two coats without letting the first one dry.
I have never worn false eyelashes so I cannot attest to the claim of no false lashes needed, but I can say that this is the best mascara I have tried in a long time. It's even better then the Chanel which is almost three times the price, and that is what makes The Falsies fabulous!

As Seen on TV

Chuck Bass's bedroom on Gossip Girl
Photo:Luxuyliving.com

As I have previously admitted I am in love with the wardrobe on Gossip Girl but the obsession doesn't end there, I am also in love with the interiors on the show. One of the main items of my affection was the painting hanging above Chuck Bass's bed that was first seen in Season 2. I had been searching for a piece for my bedroom that was fun and funky with brown tones to match the bedding that wasn't your typical bedroom art with a landscape print or generic looking abstract. So needless to say when I saw the painting in Chuck's room I thought it was perfect and had to have it. I set out on a Internet search for what I hoped would be a reasonably priced print. After a great amount of searching I found out the painting was by Richard Phillips, a painter known for his sometimes over the top pop art pieces. I also found out that the painting was actually a cropped and let's say PG version of the R rated original titled Scout, making this piece Scout Crop. I also found out that the painting cost thousands of dollars. Definitely out of my price range, so sadly I gave up hope. Then one day I received an email from Intermix (a boutique in New York, LA and Chicago that also has an online shop) announcing that they would be selling art work from Works on Whatever featuring pieces from Gossip Girl. I immediately went to the website and found out that they were selling a print on canvas of both Scout Crop and the other Richard Phillips piece Spectrum that is shown in the stairwell of the Van Der Woodsen house (another piece I love) along with a couple of Jessica Craig Martin photos on canvas and a few other pieces seen on the show. The canvases sell for $250 with proceeds from the sale going to the non-profit organization The Art Production Fund. Since at $250 it was considered a big ticket item for me I slept on the idea. The next day I was still thinking about it so I made the purchase even though I could not see it in person and it was non-refundable. I can honestly say the only thing I didn't like about it was that the print doesn't bleed all the way off the side of the canvas so it leaves a quarter inch of white around the edge (which is fine for me since I have white walls but if you were putting it on a colored wall it might stick out more), that and it took five looong weeks to be delivered. Once I got up on the wall though it was perfect. It's definitely a fun, unexpected conversation piece and it fit right in with the rest of the art in the house. The brown and green tones blended in perfectly with the colors of the bedding and the pink sunglasses gave the room a pop of color. And with the originals costing thousands, $250 is actually a bargain especially since most cheaper art work of that size will run you around $100 anyway. So if you are looking for the perfect out of the ordinary piece for your place, I highly suggest Works on Whatever as a great place to start the search.

Miracle Machine

If there is one thing I hate it's cleaning. I hate it so much I think I might be allergic to it. I dread doing it so much that I am instantly depressed just thinking about it. I also refuse to do it at any other time then Sunday evening since I am already depressed about the weekend being over I figure I might as well just make it worse and clean as opposed to doing it any other day and ruining my day.
I group ironing into the category of cleaning, and there is only one appliance (the vacuum) I hate more then the iron. I am terrible at ironing and this fact is compounded by the fact that I refuse to buy a ironing board. My mother however is an ironing fanatic. She irons everything, even scrub pants. Who irons scrubs?!?!?! I thought that was one of the perks of working in a profession where you got to wear scrubs, no ironing. Anyway, my mother hates the site of wrinkly clothes as much as I hate ironing so after years of her nagging me about my clothes not being ironed properly she talked me into buying a steamer. Let me tell you best advice ever.
My mornings have become so much easier. I just pull out the steamer, plug it in, continue getting ready and in about five minutes it's ready to go. It comes with an extension that let's you hang your garment up right there and a shirt or a skirt takes less then five minutes tops to become wrinkle free. It's super quick and easy. Just be careful not to get your hand with the steam when holding the garment. It's also great if you have an outfit that has to last you all day. If you have a chance to run home between day and night, a quick steam and it looks like an outfit you just put on, and your out the door in less then ten minutes. I'm telling you it's a lifesaver.
I have never used this particular model featured above (the Shark model I have is no longer available) but it had the best ratings out of all of the garment steamers that were similar to mine. This one is $65 at Best Buy but you might also want to check out Bed Bath and Beyond to see if they carry the same brand so you can use one of the many coupons we all receive in the mail from them for 20% off. While $65 is not super cheap, trust me it will be one of the best investments you'll make. Especially if you hate ironing as much as I do. Added plus, you'll make mom happy too :).

Product of the Week

This week's product of the week is Aveda's Beautifying Composition. Today at the gym a group of girls were waxing poetic on the virtues of Aveda products and I had to put my two cents in about the beautifying composition since most people have never heard of it.
While Aveda's virtues are many one of them is not being super affordable. So instead of filling my bathroom with their products like I would like to, I instead allow myself a couple of products that aren't everyday use products so they last. One of those products is this oil that seems to cure everything beauty related (well almost everything). At $21for 1.7oz it is a tad steep but trust me a little bit goes a long way (unless you are using it as a body oil, which if you can afford it for that use I am sure it is fabulous). I originally purchased mine as a scalp oil, since they say they key to healthy hair is a healthy scalp. :) All I do is shake out five or six drops into my hand, rub it onto my fingers and massage around my scalp with it, then instead of wiping my hands off or washing them I wipe them off on my ends and then rub the rest into my hands and leave it on for five minutes before rinsing it out and washing my hair. And poof soft hands, scalp and ends all from just a few drops of this amazing little product. I also use it every once in a while if I have spots of dry skin or dry cuticles in the winter. The best part is it doesn't leave your hair or skin super oily, it smells amazing and it is made of mostly natural products which is a big plus in my book. The product is a little hard to spot in the store as it is kept with the candles and massage oils not the hair and body products. I found mine at the Aveda store in the Galleria.
Another little tip for all of you Aveda lovers on a budget is that lately most fashion magazines have an Aveda sidebar ad that usually runs along the side of the masthead (that page with all the names on it that no one really looks at) offering sample packs of their newest product lines. It says you just have to ask but I always bring in the ad because they always ask for it. The samples are decent size and you normally get three sample products per pack and it's completely free you don't even have to make a purchase! If you do make a purchase make sure to get on their mailing list. Once on the list they will send you a card on your birthday for a free full size container of bath salts. They mix the salts with an essential oil of your choice and they have you smell all of them and narrow it down. It's about a 10 min process but it was pretty fun and I looove the bath salts, soo soothing after a tough day at the gym.

Wardrobe Envy

Photo: People StyleWatch (Flynet, Pacific Coast News, Splash News Online, Ba)

One of my guilty little pleasures is Gossip Girl. Originally I was only supposed to watch one episode to check out the clothes since by the time I started watching (near the end of season 1) the show had been featured in every magazine under the sun. Of course what started with one episode snowballed into a deep need to find out if Chuck and Blair (Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester) will ever make it as a couple. So now we sit three seasons in and I cannot wait for the fourth season to begin now that I have seen the pictures from the set inundating the Internet. Now while Blake Lively's character on the show (Serena) is not the most interesting, I love her wardrobe. Last season she went a little off the deep end with the super showy, tight and short outfits but the pics coming out of season 4 show her back to her usual funky fashionable looks. I for one am dyyyyying over the Parisian chic looks featured above. I love all of them so much I can't narrow down to a favorite. We are talking serious wardrobe envy here! I am definitely going to have to try to copy at least one of them. If I do I'll be sure to share it with you! Until then xoxo ;)

Shoe Love

Shoes Aldo

Shoes Jeffrey Campbell

I have been on the look out for a pair of black wedge booties for probably over a year now. The search took forever due to my pickiness of wanting a bootie with a wedge heel that was open toed so that they could be worn in warmer months as well as somewhat colder months.
I saw the Jeffrey Campbell Tick Wedges a few months ago and looooved them. But I figured my size 9 feet were going to look super clunky in them. The $200 price tag wasn't really swaying the process in the right direction either. But if you are one of those lucky gals with tiny little feet you can get them at Singer 22 for $125 by using the code starstyle (not sure if it will work on the sizes that have to be pre-ordered).
Finally, a couple of weeks ago my search came to an end when I found these wedges at Aldo at West County Mall. They still have the edginess of the Jeffrey Campbell's but the cut outs and lack of platform give the shoe a sexier more feminine look. Plus they will go with light summery dresses as well, a look that the JC's would have a hard time pulling off. I have already paired them with this outfit and already have a couple other outfits for them in mind. The booties were a little more then I normally like to spend but I figured with the time spent looking for them and the wearability they had they were worth it. If you order them online you can get free shipping and 10% off using the code 174606939. Happy Shopping!

Holiday Treats

This week at work we celebrated a coworker's birthday by bringing in an array of desserts. I decided it had been a while since I had made a jello cake and since it is one of my favorite desserts I made one as my contribution. While I was making it I realized it would be the perfect dessert to bring to a 4th of July BBQ. I made the one above (sorry for the terrible picture I forgot to take a pic before hand and realized after it had been released to the masses) using strawberry jello and strawberries. I have never tried any other variations but I am sure any red or blue flavors of jello would work. To make it a little more festive on top you could alternate rows of strawberries and blueberries for the red white and blue look.

Whatever combination of the recipe you decide to make, it is super quick and easy. All you have to do is bake a white cake according to the directions on the box. Once the cake is done poke holes all over the cake in rows about 1/2 inch to an inch apart. I use a wooden kabob skewer to make the holes since I always have those on hand for last minute appetizers and they are super cheap for a bag full of them. Most grocery stores sell them in the kitchen utensils aisle. Anything that is larger around then a toothpick and smaller around then a pencil will work fine though. Next dissolve one small box of jello mix in one cup of hot water. The water doesn't have to be boiling but needs to be hot enough to dissolve the mix. Once dissolved, add one cup of cold water to it and pour the mixture all over the cake. Set the cake on a hot pad in the refrigerator to chill. Just before serving frost it with one tub of cool whip (I use the fat free kind) and top it with the fruit of your choice. So simple and everyone will love it. It is the perfect summer cake since it is not a heavy cake and the jello makes it super moist.

Another tasty treat that was brought in was the peanut butter bar above. I have never made these before but I since they were deeeeeelicous I had to get the recipe. I am a huge fan of anything with peanut butter and chocolate but my favorite has always been the Reese's Peanut Butter Egg. Well let me tell you this blows the peanut butter egg out of the water. The best part is that the recipe looks super easy. And thanks to my coworker it's yours :)

24 oz jar creamy Jiff peanut butter
½ cup butter
1 cup graham cracker crumbs
Box of powdered sugar, which is 3 ½ cups

Mix ingredients above together and spread into a greased cookie sheet. For the topping use:
1 bag chocolate chips
½ cup butter

Melt on low heat until smooth. Poor on top.Let sit overnight in the refrigerator. These are best served cold.

Have any holiday favorites? Leave them in the comments below.

Hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th of July holiday!

Things That Made My Week Great-The Boys of Summer

Dennis Leary, Daniel Sunjata and the rest of the gang from Rescue Me.
Another plus for this show is that jumping around and dancing like a crazy person to the theme song, C'mon C'mon by the Von Bondies, when no one is watching is one of the best stress relievers ever! Even if you don't watch the show I highly suggest the song. Check it out here.

Wild Flower

So good I had to post the picture twice :) Just in case you missed it the first time.

As you can see from the post below about my weekend, I had brunch at Wild Flower and it was a-mah-zing! I had been there a few times before but not since they revamped their menus and never for breakfast/brunch (which is by far my favorite meal). Clearly I have been missing out.
Upon first glancing at the menu I narrowed down what I wanted to two things: the monte cristo or the breakfast wrap. Then our waitress came out and told us the specials and now I was up to six things to narrow down from: the previous two and then the chocolate chip raspberry pancakes, banana caramel waffle, baguette french toast topped with fresh berries, or the quiche. I decided that a tough decision like that was going to require a cocktail which was a no brainer since I cannot pass up a mimosa and their version includes Grand Marnier, so even better. If you like mojitos you might have a dilemma as there was a whole list of fruity options to choose from. My friend and I decided we both couldn't make a decision so together we picked one savory option and one sweet and split them. We ended up with the breakfast wrap and the french toast both of which did not disappoint. The breakfast wrap was the best one I have had in a long time, if I wanted to put myself in a day long food coma I probably could have eaten a whole one plus my portion of the french toast, since that too could not have been passed up. I have had french toast on a lot of different breads but oddly enough never on a baguette, yet Wild Flower's was so good I want to try my own at home. The french toast seemed to already have syrup baked into it and that along with the sweetness of the berries and the berry sauce that was drizzled over it made it edible without really needing syrup, although I still used a bit. With my maple syrup obsession (evidenced here) I usually drown everything in it, so the fact that I only used a little says a lot about how good this french toast was.
After I was done with my mimosa I tried the bellini. The bellini was ok it would have been better if I was just having it as an afternoon cocktail on the patio outside but it was a bit much with breakfast since it is the consistency of a slushy.
Overall everything there was amazing including the atmoshere the staff who were all super friendly. The inside (where we sat) is like sitting in a cozy little bistro, while there is also a bar area along with a private banquet area that I hear is quite nice as well. Weather permitting the patio is a fabulous place to enjoy great food and people watching as it is perfectly situated on the corner of Euclid and Laclede. So the next time you are thinking of trying someplace new for any meal I highly suggest you check out Wild Flower. And if you've already been there feel free to list your favorite must try dishes in the comments below. Bon appetite!
